BYD's September Car Sales Top 460,000, Up 17% — But Overseas Growth Masks Weak China Demand

BYD's September Car Sales Top 460,000, Up 17% — But Overseas Growth...

BYD sold over 460,000 vehicles in September, up 17% year-over-year, as strong overseas expansion offset softening demand at home. Year-to-date sales stand at 3.13 million units, still down 4% versus the same period in 2025, against a full-year target of roughly 5-5.5 million vehicles.

Overseas sales made up nearly 40% of September's total, driven by rapid expansion in Europe, Southeast Asia, and South America. Rising oil prices from the Iran conflict are reportedly pushing more European drivers toward EVs and plug-in hybrids — segments where BYD has a wide model lineup — making Europe a key growth market given high EV adoption and purchasing power there. Long-term, BYD plans three assembly plants and one EV battery plant in Europe, and is reportedly exploring acquiring underused factories in France, Spain, and Italy.

Domestically, China sales remain soft, pressured by reduced EV subsidies and a prolonged property-market downturn weighing on consumer spending.
