Google $GOOG Tightens Gemini Model Access — Free Users Limited to Flash-Lite, Pro Models Reserved for Paid Plans

Google updated its support documentation on model limits and quotas by plan tier, effective October 9, 2026. Free-tier users will only have access to Gemini's smallest model family, Flash-Lite. The entry paid plan, AI Plus, adds Flash-Lite and Flash but still excludes Pro models. Only Pro and Ultra subscribers get full access to all models.

Within each model, users can also choose a "thinking" effort level — low, medium, or high — which affects how complex a task it can handle and how many tokens it uses. Pro and Ultra subscribers additionally get a "Deep Think" option for advanced tasks.

Currently available models include Gemini 3.8 Flash, Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, and Gemini 3.1 Pro, while the new flagship Gemini 4 Argon will launch exclusively for Ultra subscribers first.
