Cloudflare $NET Acquires Deno, Folding the Team Into Cloudflare Workers — Runtime to Get One More Year of Support

Cloudflare $NET Acquires Deno, Folding the Team Into Cloudflare Wor...

Cloudflare has acquired Deno, the maker of a Rust-built JavaScript runtime, for an undisclosed amount. The clearest consequence: the Deno team will stop developing the runtime itself, committing to just one more year of new releases. For Deno Deploy customers (Deno's cloud hosting service), the service will keep running for 6 more months, with a migration path to Cloudflare Workers to follow.

What Cloudflare actually wanted, per the announcement, wasn't the Deno runtime itself — it was celld, a project that replicates Cloudflare's Durable Objects but can be self-hosted, released just this past August. Cloudflare's Kenton Varda said there's long been criticism that using Durable Objects locks customers into Cloudflare's platform specifically; merging celld into workerd (Cloudflare's open-source runtime) turns it into an open platform where customers can choose to run on Cloudflare or self-host elsewhere — something customers have reportedly already been doing periodically.

While workerd has long been open source, Durable Objects itself had remained development-only, limited to a single instance and unsuitable for production use. Celld, despite being open source, can handle real production load — so going forward, the team plans to merge celld's code and architecture into workerd, letting enterprises run this Cloudflare-style platform on their own infrastructure.
